Bactiquant-water targets a naturally occurring enzyme activity in bacteria. The enzyme activity is present in a broad spectrum of bacteria, representing all major taxonomic groups, including gram negative and gram positive bacteria, as well as aerobes and anaerobes. The enzyme activity belongs to a class of enzymes called hydrolases.

Bactiquant-water is very sensitive to the presence of bacteria in water samples including suspended as well as bacteria immobilized on particles or in aggregates. With the Bactiquant-water, bacterial contaminants can be concentrated from large volumes of water allowing low analysis time even at relatively low bacterial concentrations.

The tabel below shows examples of bacteria that express the target enzyme activity. The bacteria includes gram positive, gram negative and represents all major taxonomical groups.

Traditional plate counts are time consuming and cumbersome to perform and provide limited information about water treatment processes because the plate counts includes less than 1% of the bacteria present in a water sample and it does not include quantification of particle associated bacteria. Bactiquant water was developed to overcome these drawbacks. The results is a rapid method for quantification of total bacteria, reducing analysis time from days to minutes.Bactiquant analysis results have a high reproducibility and repeatability as documented by the US-EPA in its recent verification report on the technology.

In lab based monocultures and other well defined systems there will be an excellent correlation with the traditional plate count. The graph below shows a correlation between CFU (DS6222) and the results of a bactiquant analysis in a controlled laboratory experiment.

Comparisons based on monocultures grown under controlled lab conditions will differ from comparisons based on environmental and industrial water samples due to differences in flocullation, viability, range of bacteria detected and the localization of bacteria (e.g. on particles).
