Mold spores from outdoor sources are present in all buildings, but mold growth above a trivial level is not. Mold growth amplifies the level of naturally occurring mold by millions of times which can lead to health problems for the occupants. Mold growth above a trivial level is unacceptable in buildings where occupants live or work.
Mold spores can be regarded as free indicators of moist in buildings. Germination of spores into hyphae leads to a strong amplification of the mold. This only occurs when moist is introduced. The source may contribute moist continuously, periodically or as a severe one time event. While a moisture meter shows the current moisture level mold growth gives an integral over the moisture situation over a long period.
Examples of sources of moisture:
Continuously:
leaking pipes
Periodic:
rain which penetrates the climate shield.
A single event:
broken pipes, overflow.

Mold growth is a problem irrespective of the species present. No mold species is considered safe. Dead mold growth represents a health risk as well as living mold growth. Mold remediation is therefore, about removing mold growth, not killing it.
